What is the difference between MMA and TIG welding?

In the world of metal joining, arc welding is undoubtedly the cornerstone. Manual Metal Arc welding (MMA) and Tungsten Inert Gas welding (TIG), as two of the most widely used and representative processes, are often compared. Although both belong to the arc welding family, they diverge in principle, operation, application, and aesthetics, like the "bold and expressive" versus the "meticulous and detailed" styles in the field of welding. Understanding the fundamental differences between the two is crucial for selecting the correct process and ensuring welding quality and efficiency.

The most fundamental physical difference between MMA and TIG determines the composition of the entire welding system.
MMA (Manual Metal Arc welding): Uses a consumable electrode. The welding rod serves a dual purpose: it is both the electrode that generates the arc and the filler metal for the weld. The flux coating on the outside of the rod decomposes at high temperatures, producing gas and slag, which together protect the weld pool from atmospheric contamination.


TIG (Tungsten Inert Gas welding): Uses a non-consumable electrode. A ​​high-melting-point pure tungsten or tungsten alloy (such as cerium tungsten or thorium tungsten) is used as the electrode, only to generate and maintain the arc, and it hardly melts itself. The filler metal (if needed) is fed into the arc area by the welder holding a separate welding rod. Protection is provided by a continuous flow of pure argon or helium inert gas from the welding torch nozzle, creating a clean welding environment.

 

MMA and TIG are not simply a matter of advanced versus outdated technology, but rather represent two extreme ends of the welding technology spectrum.

When you need "high efficiency, robustness, adaptability, and cost-effectiveness," especially for outdoor work, construction sites, or thick plate welding, MMA is the ideal choice.
When you seek "ultimate aesthetics, high quality, low distortion, and precise control," especially for welding thin plates, stainless steel, or non-ferrous metals, TIG reigns supreme.
